I wanted to provide an update regarding Mobile phone theft, which some members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey. Dear Residents,
We hope this message finds you well.
We would like to make you aware of a recent increase in mobile phone thefts in the Hayes area. Offenders are often targeting people who are distracted while using their phones in public places, such as busy streets, shopping areas, and near transport hubs.
As you could imagine, these incidents can have a significant impact on victims, often involving opportunistic snatches in busy areas or distraction tactics. Thieves can be very clever in identifying potential victims and using distraction techniques or threats of violence, but they are also very aware of their surroundings and plan on how to steal someone’s phone. We will continue to chase down and arrest those responsible, providing updates when we can. In the meantime, there a number of things you can do to keep yourself safe:
• Keep your phone and other valuables out of sight when not in use. • Be aware of your surroundings, especially when making calls or using apps in public. • Avoid using your phone while walking near the edge of the pavement, where it can be easily snatched. • If you feel unsafe or notice suspicious behaviour, trust your instincts and move to a safer location. • Secure your phone by choosing a strong pin or password • Set up a tracking app on your phone so you can see where it is from another device like a laptop. Use it as soon as possible, before thieves have a chance to disable it. • Turn off message previews, so that thieves won’t see any messages about reset or login codes when your phone is locked. • Keep a note of your IMEU number (to access, type *#06# on your phone keypad) • Plan your route, especially if you are going somewhere, you have not been before. Keep too busy, well-lit streets and walkways. Move with purpose and appear confident.
Your safety is our priority. Our local officers are increasing patrols in affected areas and working hard to deter and catch those responsible. If you have any information about these incidents, or if you see anything suspicious, please report it to us immediately by calling 101, or 999 in an emergency. You can also report anonymously to Crime stoppers on 0800 555 111.
Thank you for your cooperation in helping us keep Hayes a safe place for everyone.
