I wanted to provide you with an update regarding burglary, which people around your area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the priority survey. Secure your property Lock up: Always lock all doors and windows, even when you're only going out for a few minutes. Install an alarm: Fit a visible, audible burglar alarm system with boxes at both the front and back of your home. Use light timers: Use timers to automatically turn lights and a radio on and off to create the illusion of occupancy when you are out or away. Secure exterior areas: Keep garden tools and ladders out of sight and ensure sheds and outbuildings are always locked. Improve fences and boundaries: Use higher fences at the rear and sides of your property, and consider adding deterrents like thorny plants or anti-climb topping to gates and fences. Use security features: Install security film or laminated glass on ground-floor windows. Use sash stops on sash windows to prevent them from opening enough to climb through. Make it look occupied Manage deliveries when away: Cancel milk and newspaper deliveries if you are away for an extended period. Ask for help: Ask a neighbor to keep an eye on your home, park their car in your driveway, or close curtains for you while you're away. Remove evidence of absence: Don't leave packaging for expensive new gifts outside after holidays; dispose of it in your recycling box, out of sight. Protect valuables and deter thieves Keep valuables out of sight: Don't leave valuables like electronics or jewelry in plain view from windows. Secure keys and documents: Don't leave car keys or identification documents near doors, windows, or letterboxes. Mark your property: Mark or etch valuables with your postcode or house number. Register serial numbers on free online services like Immobilise. Be cautious with visitors: Always check who is at the door before opening it and be wary of distraction burglaries where two or more people try to gain entry by confusing you.
While we will continue to pursue burglars in the area, there are steps you can do to help keep your property safe. Make sure that you: Double lock your door every time you leave the house If you can, move garden furniture or bins away from windows so that thieves cannot use them to gain access. Use laminated glass or security film on ground floor and accessible windows. Use a sash stop if you have sash windows to prevent people opening them enough to climb through. If your windows open outwards, use a key operated lock – check these are locked before leaving the house. Make sure all valuables are out of sight. Keep handbags and keys away from letterboxes or cat flaps. In the evening shut the curtains and leave lights on. Set your burglar alarm Lock your shed or garage Mark, register or record your valuables.
