I wanted to provide you with an update regarding dangerous driving and speeding, which some members around this area have highlighted as an issue of concern on the Met Engage priority survey. We know that the improper use of E-bikes is a cause of concern to many local residents in Merton.
I would like to update you all, that since November this year, Merton SNT Officers have seized 34 E-bikes and processed the riders for various offences. In addition to these seizures, we recently executed a search warrant in an address in Pollards Hill and uncovered what we suspect to be an E-Bike "chop-shop", whereby different bikes are broken down and reassembled, often to create an illegal and overpowered E-Bike. As a direct result of this warrant, four individuals were arrested.
We know that not all E-Bikes are illegal or overpowered and we know that not all E-Bikes riders behave and/or ride irresponsibly, but I want to reassure you that your Officers in Merton are out there, day in, day out seeking to tackle those individuals who break the law and make others feel unsafe.
Mindful that this is an issue that is keenly felt across the Borough, I wanted to provide you with an update in the hope that it will offer some reassurance that we are listening to your concerns and making a concerted effort to take appropriate action.
The attached photo was recently taken showing a number of the E-Bikes that we have recently seized.
Please continue to report crime to the Police and engage with your Safer Neighbourhood Teams in relation to local concerns. If you wish to report anything anonymously, please use Crimestoppers.
Thank you for your continued support.
If someone is driving a motor vehicle, they should always be doing so in a safe and considerate manner. Even momentary lapses in judgement can have life changing or devastating consequences for those in the vehicle or innocent bystanders. Activities such as street racing, cruising or performing tricks can count as anti-social behaviour. If you are concerned about this in your area, visit our website for the latest guidance and how you can report this. You can also report dangerous driving in your area.
