Crime Prevention Advice: Fraudulent “Antique Buyers” / Doorstep Theft

We have been made aware of reports of potential fraudulent doorstep callers who knock on doors claiming to be interested in buying antiques, jewellery or collectibles.

In these incidents, the individuals may:

Say they are antique dealers or collectors

Ask to look inside your home or garage

Distract the occupant while items are stolen

Target older or vulnerable residents

How to protect yourself and others

Please share this advice with friends, family, neighbours and especially anyone elderly or vulnerable you may know:

Do not allow unknown callers into your home

Genuine dealers do not cold‑call at private addresses

Keep doors locked and speak through the door or window if unsure

Never show valuables to someone you don’t know

If you feel pressured or uncomfortable, close the door

Call police if you are suspicious

Look out for warning signs

Two or more people attending together

Requests to “just have a quick look inside”

Flattery or urgency to rush your decision

Poor identification or refusal to provide details

What to do if you are concerned

If someone is acting suspiciously call 999 (especially if vulnerable residents are involved)

Otherwise, report concerns via 101 or online

Share this warning with neighbours, carers and community groups

Remember that it is absolutely okay to say NO and shut the door. No genuine trader will pressure you or object to you seeking advice.
