As the nights get longer and darker during the winter months, burglars often take advantage of properties that appear unoccupied or insecure. Residents are advised to take the following steps to reduce the risk of burglary: Ensure all doors and windows are securely locked whenever leaving the property, even for a short period.Use timer switches on lights to give the impression that someone is at home during the evening.Keep valuable items such as laptops, tablets, mobile phones, cash and jewellery out of sight from windows.Avoid leaving packaging from expensive purchases outside where it can advertise valuable items inside the property.Make sure sheds, garages and outbuildings are locked and secured, as these can contain valuable tools and equipment.Keep vehicle keys away from doors, windows and letterboxes, preferably in a secure location.Consider using a steering wheel lock or other vehicle security device to prevent theft of vehicles.Ensure side gates and fences are secure to restrict access to rear gardens.Trim hedges and shrubs that could provide cover for offenders while maintaining reasonable natural surveillance.Install and maintain external security lighting and, where possible, CCTV or video doorbells.Record serial numbers and register valuable property on a recognised property marking scheme.Be cautious about sharing holiday plans or periods of absence on social media.Report any suspicious persons, vehicles or activity in the area promptly to police.
